Biography

The House of De Vere crest.
Margaret (de Vere) Devereux is a member of the House of De Vere.

Margaret de Vere was the daughter of John de Vere, Knt., 7th Earl of Oxford and Maud de Badlesmere.[1][2][3][4] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Marriages and Children

Margaret married first Henry de Beaumont, Knt., 3rd Lord Beaumont,[1] of Folkingham, Yorkshire,[3] son of Sir John de Beaumont, 2nd Lord Beaumont, by Eleanor of Lancaster,[5] before 15 February 1363 (date of indult).[6][7] They had four sons and one probable daughter:
  • John, K.G., 4th Lord Beaumont, born about 1361, died 9 September 1396, married Katherine de Everingham and had issue[6]
  • Henry[6]
  • Richard[6]
  • Thomas[6]
  • Eleanor, wife of Sir Richard de Moleyns[6]
Henry de Beaumont died 13 June 1369[3] or 25 July 1369 and was buried at Sempringham Priory, Lincolnshire.[6]
Margaret married second Nicholas de Lovayne, Knt.,[1] as his second wife, before March 1370.[3][6] They had one son and one daughter:
  • Nicholas[3][7]
  • Margaret, wife of Sir Richard Chamberlain and of Sir Philip Saint Clair,[6] she was born about 1372, died 18 April 1408, having issue with both spouses[3]
Nicholas de Lovaine died between 20 September 1375 and 25 November 1375 and his will requested burial at the Abbey Church of Penshurst, Kent or at the Abbey of St. Mary de Graces, near the Tower of London.[3]
Margaret married third John Devereux, K.G., 1st Lord Devereux,[1] probable younger son of Sir William Devereux,[8] Seneschal of Limousin, by Anne Barre.[3] They married 17 June 1379[6] or before 8 November 1382.[3] They had one son and one daughter:
  • John, Knt., 2nd Lord Devereux, born about 1377, died 13 November 1396, married Phillippe Bryan and had no issue[3]
  • Joan, wife of Sir Walter FitzWalter, 4th Lord FitzWalter[3] and of Hugh Burnell, K.G., 2nd Lord Burnell[6]
John Devereux died 22 February 1392/3 and was buried in the church of the Grey Friars, London.[3][8] He left a will dated June 1385, proved 23 February 1392/3[3] at St. Paul's Church, London.[8] Margaret's widow’s dower was assigned 25 February 1393/4.[8]

Death and Burial

Margaret died on 15 June 1398.[9] She was buried at Grey Friars, London with her third husband.[3][6][8]
Her daughter Margaret was heir of the manors in Oxford.[9]

Research Note

Discrepancies in Richardson

Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry, volumes 1 & 3 have different data for:
  • Henry Beaumont's date of death: 13 June 1369 (vol 3) and 25 July 1369 (vol 1 and CP4). Complete Peerage vol 2. has DOD as 17 June 1369.
  • Margaret's marriage to Devereux: before 8 Nov 1382 (vol 3) and 17 June 1379 (vol 1). No date in CP4.
  • For Joan Devereux, child of Margaret's third marriage, vol. 1 lists 2 marriages, to FitzWater and to Burnell, while vol. 3 only names FitzWalter. Burnell marriage is in MCA v. 1, pages 269-270, BOTETOURT 6.i.b. and vol 2, page 213 FITZ WALTER 7.

Disputed Child

Lewis lists Margaret Devereux as a child of Margaret and John Devereux, citing Plantagenet Ancestry and Royal Ancestry (checked RA ... this was cited incorrectly). Margaret was removed as their daughter 15 May 2020.
